An order arriving early is only helpful when the destination can store it properly. Unfinished spaces, wet trades and repeated handling can expose materials to damage before installation. Include storage conditions in the procurement plan, especially for decorative woodwork, finished metal and fragile surfaces.

Ask for product-specific instructions

Request the supplier's requirements for orientation, stacking, moisture protection, temperature and handling. Share them with the site team before shipment. Architectural Woodwork Institute guidance addresses controlled storage and protection from moisture for woodwork; other products need their own applicable instructions.

Designate the receiving area

Identify a secure location with suitable access and protection. Keep materials separated from activities that may damage finishes. Label packages by installation zone so that they can be located without opening every carton or repeatedly moving heavy crates.

Handover checklist

  • Named person responsible for receiving and storage.
  • Inventory linked to carton and item references.
  • Photographs and records of arrival condition.
  • Installation sequence and access for inspections.

Do not assume that transport packaging is suitable for indefinite site storage. Confirm when protective films should be removed and whether moisture can become trapped. If the building is not ready, compare controlled off-site storage or revised shipment timing with the risks of leaving goods in an unsuitable area.
